OUR MISSION

After five years in the music world, something became really clear: when it comes to events, everyone is juggling a lot. 🚀

There’s so much more to a great performance than just the music — and the support to bring it all together hasn't been easy to come by. That's where we come in!

Over the years, we’ve built and refined systems that take the guesswork out of the process — for everyone involved. Whether it’s a celebration, a production, or something entirely unique, we’re here to make things seamless, stress-free, and tailored to the vision behind it.

This isn’t just about providing great music (although we do that too) — it’s about delivering smooth, professional, memorable experiences from start to finish. 🎶

And we’re only just getting started. We’ve got big ideas and exciting projects in the works that we believe can make a real difference in how live music is brought to life — and we can’t wait to show you what’s coming next. 💜

OUR HISTORY

2020

In March 2020, we started The Slips.

A simple, but effective idea. A 4-piece band to accompany artists who don't have one! Things got really busy, really fast...

2021

April 2021, we launched Fifth Layer Music.
A collective of professional musicians - ready to accompany, entertain, and record.

We spent our COVID lockdown building resources and processes, creating conversations and connections, and most importantly - learning.

2022

By 2022, Fifth Layer had really grown.

In 12 months, Fifth Layer Music had expanded into a collective of 25 musicians — providing music services for artist accompaniment, bands for showcases and schools, entertainment for weddings and functions, and recording services.

MEET MURRAY

Hi, I’m Murray 👋

Drummer, spreadsheet enthusiast, and founder of
The Sound Board of Australia.

Through years of wearing many different hats in events, I saw firsthand how tricky it can be for both musicians, and the people hiring them. With a background in business, marketing, and events, I started The Sound Board to help bridge that gap: making it easier for clients to book amazing live music, and for musicians to do what they love without all the hassle.

I’m big on problem solving, building better systems, and questioning the way things have 'always been done'. Most of what I’ve learned has come from real-world experience (and a few hard lessons), and I’m passionate about sharing that knowledge to make things better - for everyone involved.

If you're planning an event or just want to know more about how we work, I’d love to chat!
